How to Keep Your Car Wash COVID-19 and Germ-Free

As the number of new COVID-19 cases continues to increase, car wash owners aren’t the only ones concerned with what they can do to help reduce the spread of this deadly virus. One thing all car wash owners should be doing is allowing for sufficient time each day to do detailed cleaning and sanitation of their car wash.

1. Make face coverings accessible for employees and customers.

Reusable Cloth Face MasksYou want to make sure your employees and customers are wearing face coverings when visiting your car wash. When people must be in close proximately and cannot socially distance, the best way to protect yourself and others is by wearing a face mask.

You can sell face masks to your customers in your vending machine or your car wash lobby. You could also stock and sell disposable gloves if you have a self-serve car wash. By requiring people to wear gloves when using the car wash equipment, it will help reduce the spread of germs.

2. Stock up on the right cleaning supplies.

Make sure you have cleaning supplies that disinfect and kill germs. There are numerous products out there. If they are hard to find, you can always use bleach. Just be careful to not mix any other cleaning products with the bleach.

You will also want plenty of microfiber towels for cleaning, as well as a mop bucket and a mop. With reusable items, make sure to only use them once, and then launder them. Don’t forget to also get plenty of gloves to wear while you are cleaning.

3. Clean high traffic areas frequently.

You want to disinfect and wipe down things like handles, knobs, triggers, chairs, benches, etc. after they are touched or used by a customer. Bathrooms should be cleaned immediately after they are used.

Don’t forget about the credit/debit card box and clear divider too. Make sure to disinfect the box and divider on the customer’s side after every transaction.

4. Screen employees before allowing them to work.

While someone could be asymptomatic, taking temperatures can help find when someone is sick. If they have a temperature of 100.4 or higher, tell them to go home, go see their doctor, and get tested for coronavirus if needed. It also doesn’t hurt to take the temperatures of customers before allowing entry to your indoor waiting area and lobby.

5. Provide access to hand sanitizer.

Place sanitizer stations in each car wash bay next to equipment and encourage customers to sanitize their hands before and after using the equipment.

6. Rotate vacuum bays and car wash bays.

At self-serve car washes, to maintain proper social distancing, you will want to block off vacuum cleaner bays when at least six feet of distancing cannot be maintained. It is a good idea to also rotate them, as well as your car wash bays.

This way, you or your employees can clean and disinfect “used” vacuum cleaners and car wash bays in between customers while still having vacuums and car wash bays available so customers don’t have to wait.

7. Do a detailed cleaning every day.

You will want to do a detailed cleaning of your entire car wash every day, including wash bays, vacuums, car wash equipment, bathrooms, vending machines, and any other areas employees and customers use, access, and touch. You may want to adjust your operating hours, if needed, to ensure you can keep up with the additional cleaning and sanitizing needed to keep your car wash COVID-19- and germ-free.

By using these cleaning and sanitizing tips, you can do your part to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.
